  4. Surviving a Fast-Paced Work Environment

This Place Is a Circus!
How to Survive in Fast-Paced Industries

welcome to the circus

Unless you live on a deserted island, life can be pretty hectic. From the moment you wake up until the moment you close your eyes to go to sleep, the responsibilities can seem to be endless. Work is no different, as there are a variety of fast-paced industries that will keep you on the move all day long. Whether you work in medicine, food service, law, media, tech, or any number of other industries, you probably face nonstop activity and are required to be able to function efficiently and calmly no matter how hectic the world around you seems to get. Although this kind of fast-paced environment might seem overwhelming at first, it has the ability to become an exhilarating place that you look forward to being a part of each and every day. Here are some tips and tricks for battling what might often resemble a circus.

Become Educated in Your Field: Prior to accepting a job in a fast-paced industry, make sure you take some time to gain a strong understanding of both the field and the company you're considering. After all, you should know what you're getting yourself into before signing on that dotted line. Once you take the plunge, you will likely be expected to complete your responsibilities quickly and efficiently, and there will not be a lot of room for "on-the-job training."

Understand Your Role Within the Company: In addition to knowing your industry, you should be able to identify the key components of the role you will be undertaking within the company. This way, you will know exactly what is expected of you before you start, which will make it easier on both you and your employer. You will be less nervous and therefore less prone to errors you would normally never make. Your supervisor, who is likely already stressed with a plate full of responsibilities, will feel more comfortable letting you stand on your own two feet if you prove yourself capable from the start. This will allow you to get a lay of the land and save your questions for a time when your supervisor has a break and will be able to answer them more effectively.

Get to Know Your Co-Workers: More often than not, fast-paced work environments require a significant amount of teamwork. Thus, if one team member doesn't know what he or she is doing and lags behind, it has the potential to affect everyone on the team. If you know that you will be working with others, make sure to ask about their specific roles as well as your own role and how the two will interact. This will help you to keep the entire team operating smoothly regardless of how hectic everything seems to get.

Prepare Yourself in Advance: As mentioned earlier, when people start to panic, they also start to make more mistakes. Thus, it's important to take a step back before you dive in. This will allow you to recognize the full scope of the work you are required to complete, and it will give you a chance to prepare a game plan for conquering each task. It is often helpful to make a list or take notes that you can refer back to, giving yourself a few seconds to pause and re-focus.

Take a Break: Even the craziest work environments provide breaks. Use this time to take a deep breath and relax before returning to focus on the responsibilities ahead of you. It might be helpful to consider taking up yoga or meditation, as you can utilize these techniques during your breaks at work.

Efficiency Is Key: After you have been in the position for a while, you will start to pick up on ways that you can successfully multi-task and become more efficient throughout the day. Don't hesitate to take a few shortcuts, as long as it doesn't impact the quality of your work.

Bottom Line: While fast-paced work environments can make you want to pull your hair out, utilizing some helpful techniques can help you learn how to thrive in a hectic work environment.
